The 1840's were a time of new rule and greater conflict between the European nations. The ever widening expansion of railroads and social intolerance helped create an influx of emigrants into the ever expanding vistas of the United States. A great mechanical revolution began during this period, of which the particular invention of the sewing machine by Elias Howe Jr. made dresses and fashions sewn by machine, rather than by hand, all the more in vogue in popular society.
French magazines such as Godey's Lady's Book, The Union Magazine, Peterson's Magazine and Harper's Bazaar, all helped influence and define the cut of popluar fashion during this period, as both men's and women's dress became more simplified and less exaggerated than in previous decades.
